A message from our Chairman, Gerald Kenneally

Hello friends of ATLAS — Welcome to our July/August 2023 update.

“Your friends do not forget you”

Business sponsor for this month:  5th Avenue Florist, Kearns NSW

I received an email from Sister Susan Conolly RSJ, a member of the ATLAS committee, regarding an interview by Phillip Adams on the ABC show Late Night Live on 29 May 2023, with Professor Damien Kingsbury, Emeritus Professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Deakin University which you can download vis podcast.

During the interview, I noted that Professor Kingsbury mentioned that the population of Timor-Leste was sitting somewhere between 1.2 to 1.3 million people, 65% of whom are under the age of twenty.

This certainly presents challenges for employment in Timor-Leste as the Nation is still in its early years as a new nation in the twenty-first century.

Education is important to any individual. Given the statistics highlighted by Professor Kingsbury, Timor-Leste indeed needs educational support, for both teachers and students. Good quality education is needed to provide the standards required for Timorese to find employment not only in Timor but also overseas.

The Kindergarten at Maubara run by the Carmelite Sisters is looking for assistance to fund the wages of a teacher, school fees for students, and the purchase of a computer and printer for administration. The Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres need support for teachers and students at St. Paul’s School, Turiscai.
