About Edna Ferreira
From Baucau to Dili, managing a tour business and running her own sewing business, this young Timorese woman says that education was the key to her success, especially learning English.
Edna began as a casual employee at ECO Discovery Tours while studying at the Dili Institute.
Through the support of a local NGO Edna studied tourism while at the same time learning English with Maria at Eco Discovery Tours. Her knowledge of the English language served her well during the tourist season with many tourists especially schools from other countries travelling to Timor where ECO Discovery Tours would take them on tours throughout the country supplying transportation, drivers & guides.
Over the years Edna began to take on more duties at ECO while Maria the company Director was on leave.
There have been some cruise ships visit Timor and this has seen Edna make arrangements with many locations in and around Dili for overseas tourists to visit during their limited stopover time.
Edna also has her own sewing business, where she employs two local women doing repairs and making aprons for some cafés and uniforms for teachers at a school in the district. ATLAS supported Edna in her sewing business by paying the wages for a staff member during the time the business was growing.
Edna believes that education of the youth of Timor is important in building the nation, and tourism is one industry that will grow over the coming years.
