Max Stahl was a true friend of the Timorese people and their fight for justice.
Max witnessed and filmed the Santa Cruz massacre where more than 250 East Timorese people were killed by Indonesian soldiers who opened fire on a group of peaceful protestors.
They had marched from the Motael church Dili after attending a memorial service for Sebastiao Gomes, a young Timorese supporter of the independence of East Timor who had been killed a fortnight before.
Max smuggled the tape out of East Timor and it was broadcast by the BBC. All the world finally saw the injustice and torture that the Timorese people were suffering at the hands of the Indonesian army.
